Sara Davis has always had an eye for design. She worked as an art director for a greeting card company and started her own invitation business before deciding in 2014 to channel her creative energy into a late-‘90s home her family bought and updated near Indianapolis. “The house has great bones, but was very outdated,” Sara recalls. “So we set out to create a high-end-looking home without spending a fortune.”
Her first Instagram post on the renovation – a tutorial on how to hand-paint a bronze faucet – went viral. “It blew up because it was unique and easy,” she says. “People love smaller projects that can make a big impact but don’t take a lot of time, money or know-how.”
The mother of three littles says her passion for home décor started as a much-needed creative outlet. “I needed something to do to keep my sanity and enjoy some precious alone time,” she recalls with a chuckle. “I started tackling small projects during nap time and after putting the kids to bed. Now, I always have to have something going… I love a challenge!”
Sara’s sweet spot: from-scratch transformations that “look way more expensive than they actually are,” as well as smaller DIY projects like wall treatments. She and her husband completely remodeled their kitchen in only nine weeks, building cabinets and handling all tile work, and recently redid their daughter’s bathroom. “Getting your hands dirty is fun,” she says. “Pretty soon I’ll run out of rooms to tackle.”
