![]() It seems as though the table, whether it's a small kitchen table, a large dining room set or a living room coffee table, becomes the central gathering place during the holidays. What better way to add a festive dash to your home décor than to decorate your tables for the season? Below, Cathie Filian, host of the DIY Network's Creative Juice, offers some hints on how to dress your tables to the nines for the holidays. Cathie Filian grew up in the Midwest and has been taking on creative projects since she was a child. She received the Outstanding Senior Design Award from Ohio State University, and went on to create costumes for movies such as Vanilla Sky and Twister. Along with design partner Steve Piacenza, she created the DIY Network's hit show, Creative Juice. Lighting
One way to spruce up your table is to create an ambiance with lighting. "Overhead chandeliers can become dazzling hanging wreaths," Filian said. "Just by adding a little greenery and some crystal baubles, you can give your chandelier a warm winter makeover." Consider weaving garland throughout your chandelier and tying up the ends with bright red bows. Centerpieces
When it comes to centerpieces, the sky is the limit. Ordinary candles, with a little accessorizing, can become extraordinary attractions. Filian suggests grouping simple candlesticks together and weaving ribbons and berry-style tree garland through the bases to create a free-form, organic look. She also suggests adding some flair to your standard votive holders by hot gluing bands of greenery around small container candles.
Filian said that double-stick tape works wonders when creating simple yet stunning centerpieces. "You can add retro flair to a table by adding ball fringe or rick rack around the edge of a cake plate; double-stick tape works great for this," she said. She then recommends topping the plate with a variety of festive mini cakes. Double-stick tape can also be used to apply bands of ribbon around a plain vase, which you can fill with greenery and fresh-cut flowers. Linens
The look of your linens is just as important as your centerpieces. Filian suggests jazzing up dull linens by adding a bit of velvet ribbon to a plain napkin ring. "A simple wrap and a loose bow can create an elegant look," she said. And what about the napkins themselves? Sometimes a simple stitch is all you need. "Holiday buttons can be found in many shapes and sizes," she said. "Snowflakes, mini Menorahs and Santas add a little flavor when stitched onto the corner of a plain napkin." If you want to get a little more crafty, Filian suggests painting stars and swirls on your napkins using a foam stamp and some gold fabric paint. | DESIGNER ADVICEHOLIDAY DECORATINGTHROUGHOUT THE HOUSE |
