![]() With winter and the holiday season swiftly approaching, you may want to update your home décor to reflect the season. There are several ways to add a little warmth and festivity to your décor without a complete makeover. Interior designer Laura Day from Trading Spaces on the TLC network offers a fresh perspective on your winter and holiday decorating. Laura Day graduated from the New York School of Interior Design and has been in the business since 1998. Most of her projects are residential; however, Day began her career in commercial design. Originally from Arkansas, Day has her own design firm, Laura Day Design, based in New York City and lends her design sense to TLC network's Trading Spaces. A fresh look at holiday color
For a glimpse of what colors are popular this season, Day recommends perusing the covers of fashion and home décor magazines. We can expect the traditional holiday colors to have a fresh twist this season. Day said, "Decorate with different versions of the traditional red and green. Use a mix of chartreuse, yellow and olive greens instead of standard Christmas green; also pair these off greens with a burgundy or wine red and add a pewter silver and gold for holiday shimmer." Day goes against the grain and recommends mixing silver and gold. "Gold adds warmth to your décor and when it is paired with silver in the right manifest it can be enthralling. Use a bright and beautiful gold for a polished, festive look." Keep it authentic
Whether you are on a budget or not, Day urges using fresh greenery in your home. "Greenery is synonymous with the holiday season. If you are not on a budget, wrap fresh greenery around your staircase and place it in your window sills. If you cannot afford to decorate with a lot of greenery, use it sparingly and place a little on your table underneath your decorations. The holidays are all about the scents, and greenery is the perfect way to get that Christmas tree smell!" Use scented candles or incense to fill your home with holiday aromas. Also, live plants such as poinsettias or amaryllis always add color and lend that special holiday touch. Add additional warmth to your home by changing your regular light bulbs to bulbs that cast a warmer light tone during the winter months. Additional ideas
Inject warm winter hues into your home décor with pillows, wall hangings, platters and holiday decorations. Have a bowl of candy with fun, colorful wrappers available for your guests. If you want to get crafty, Day suggests displaying homemade Styrofoam balls rolled in fine glitter in a bowl. Or you can dip fruit in red or green glitter to lie on a platter. There are endless possibilities for creating beautiful, festive, holiday decorations for your own home. Use seasonal slip covers for your dining room chairs and change out your dishware if you have that option. "Your home should have a warm touch for the holidays. If you do not have extra dishware, change out your placemats or napkins. The winter season can have more of a formality than other seasons so your décor can reflect that. When you choose your décor be sure to choose quality over quantity, whether you are decorating for the holidays or not. When you are entertaining this season, be sure to entertain over stain resistant flooring. Quality flooring such as STAINMASTER® carpet will make all the difference throughout the hectic holiday season," said Day.
