To debunk the myth and offer the truth about using the hot water extraction method to clean carpet, we consulted the consumer care manager for INVISTA's STAINMASTER® carpet, Suzanne Zukowski, and The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Web site.

The typical hot water extraction method uses a machine to apply water, and in some cases cleaning solution, into the carpet pile to attack soil and greasy build-up on carpet fibers. A powerful vacuum then extracts the solution. The recommended cleaning method for STAINMASTER® carpet is hot water extraction. Zukowski explained, "When properly performed, hot water extraction will effectively remove accumulated soil from the carpet and refresh the texture."

One misconception regarding the hot water extraction method is that it takes too long to dry and as a result, mold or an odor will emerge. However, according to The CRI Web site, the carpet should be dry in 12 hours if all of the water is extracted properly. Fans can speed up the drying process.

Zukowski said, "Hot water extraction is the only method that includes a rinse, which removes residue from cleaning solutions. This reduces re-soiling resulting from attachment to cleaning solution residue remaining after the cleaning."
