Savvy Home Newsletter

Once the steamy summer months arrive, you will want a refreshing retreat in the comfort of your home. Your bedroom décor offers a great opportunity to channel the relaxation of summer without the heat and humidity. Celebrity designer Vern Yip offers advice on incorporating a few simple design techniques into your bedroom décor to give it a fresh look without investing a lot of time and money.

Colors That Channel Summer

Choose delicate patterns and color to summon a feeling of the outdoors and juxtapose them with vibrant splashes of color. Sand, cream, ivory, soft gold and other neutrals were popular this spring and these color trends will carry into the summer. Pale blue and sophisticated versions of lilac are fashionable choices right now. White is hot, and green is definitely stepping to the forefront as a wonderfully fresh option in many tones and shades.

An exciting option that allows you to bring this season's color palette into your bedroom décor is to have a bound or surged rug made from broadloom carpet. A bound or surged carpet often costs a fraction of the price of a pre-made rug and allows you to incorporate the patterns and colors that reflect the light, airy atmosphere you want to convey. STAINMASTER® carpet is available in a number of fashionable colors, textures and patterns that will fit any décor and add interest to a living space.

A neutral carpet in a textured, sculpted pattern allows you to add bold color through accessories to spice up your décor. Neutral flooring allows you to keep it year round and simply change out the accessories each season, which is relatively inexpensive. STAINMASTER® carpet with Tactesse® nylon fiber is perfect for bedrooms because it is both soft and durable.

Fresh New Accessories for the Season

Showcase the beauty of natural materials in your bedroom. Put green or flowering plants in white or cream pots. Fill decorative glass jars with white pebbles or sand for the summer. Hang linen or silk drapes in ivory, cream or other cool shades. Vases of all shapes and sizes can be filled with fresh cut limbs from flowering trees and bushes. Find table treatments and throw pillows in different colors and textures and add them to your bedroom. Replace the comforter and find an inexpensive quilt in a delicate print or fabric to cover the bed.

Vern advises homeowners to be brave and bold with color and accessories, while letting the quirky side of their personality show through. Do not be afraid to experiment a little. The unexpected creates an interesting and fresh space. The overall result is a unique room that reflects your personal style and will keep you charged all summer long.
