Savvy Home Newsletter

The holidays, a peak travel time, can bring unexpected guests to your home. Most of the time, family and friends plan ahead and provide you with advance notice, but sometimes their visits sneak up without warning. The Fine Living Network's Rick Rifle offers insight on how to convert your home office or den into a guest room on a moment's notice. Rick also shares several ideas on how to make these converted spaces comfortable and relaxing in a time crunch.

Rick Rifle has a Bachelor's in Fine Arts in Design for Costumes & Sets from Florida State University. He earned a Master's in Fine Arts in Design for Film and Stage from NYU's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. Currently, Rick is a designer on the Fine Living Network's Mail Order Makeover.

Hotel at home

When you are preparing your room for guests, you want to think in terms of what a hotel room offers their guests. Provide your guests with all of the amenities and items they would find in a hotel room. Keep a set of clean sheets ready at all times so that a bed can be made quickly. Also, make space in a closet for your guests and keep empty hangers available. Keep a set of sheets, towels and additional toiletries, such as toothbrushes, shaving cream and disposable razors, for your guests in file boxes in the closet for quick and easy access. File boxes are the perfect dimension for closets.

"The more items your guests can move out of their suitcases, the more at home they will feel. Providing closet and drawer space, as well as toiletries they may have forgotten, will create a home away from home for your guests," said Rifle.

Most home offices and dens don't come equipped with a bed. "If you do not have a pullout sofa or bed in your den or home office, air mattresses work wonderfully. Make your air mattress into a mini-bed with pillows and bedding such as mattress covers and sheets," said Rifle. "For added comfort in the winter, lay the air mattress on an area rug or blanket for insulation."

Personal touches

"The personal touches you add to a room are what make your guests feel welcome. If your guest is arriving during the holidays, add pumpkins or a mini Christmas tree to their room. During the spring and summer months, simply add fresh flowers in a vase," said Rifle.

"If your guest is a chocolate fanatic put a chocolate on their pillow or lay out the latest issue of their favorite magazine. If they are a television buff, keep a TV Guide under the remote. If your guests love movies, go the extra step and pick up some new releases from your local video store," said Rifle. "The little things you do to make your guest feel at home will not go unnoticed."

Touching up

One of the most important things to remember is to clean. The guest does not want to see your life spread out all over their room and there are probably items you do not want your guest to see. Take the time to file things away in drawers or the closet before your guest arrives.

Preparing for company can be stressful, especially when its last minute. If you follow Rick Rifle's tips and try to keep your space ready, you will save yourself a lot of aggravation. "Planning and preparation makes all the difference to company. Guests will appreciate the effort you take to make them feel welcome!" said Rifle.
