Color Personalities

Color perception is all about light waves and light waves have energy which stimulates the pituitary and pineal glands which regulate hormones and other physiological systems in the body. Because of this, it's been shown that blind people are sometimes able to identify colors by touch.

As you work with colors there are a couple principles to keep in mind. Darker colors will make a large space look smaller. Lighter colors will make a small space look larger. Colors like red, yellow and orange will warm up a room; while blue and green will help cool it down.

Red - Red is a power color. It can't be overlooked. It stimulates and excites. It increases heart rate and blood pressure and is the first color babies can see. Red would be a good choice for a living or dining room if you like to entertain.
Pink - Unlike its "mother" color, pink is soothing, even to the point of being able to relax muscles. Since it curtails the secretion of adrenaline and has something of a tranquilizing effect, pink is sometimes used in prison holding cells, hospital rooms and drug centers.
Orange - Orange stimulates the appetite and decreases fatigue. It adds warmth and joy and is good for social areas. If you find orange a little too stimulating, you may prefer one of its calmer cousins, peach or coral.
Yellow - Bright yellow is another stimulating color, but, even though it raises heart rate and blood pressure, it isn't quite as stimulating as red. Yellow can improve memory and enhance mental activity, but be careful. Yellow can cause irritability if overdone. A soft, low intensity version of this color is safest.
Green - Green has a calming effect on both mind and body and, with its association with springtime and new growth, green brings feelings of hope and anticipation. Green helps with self control. Grayed greens, like sage, are especially easy to live with.
Blue - Blue is the most loved color in the world. It is also one of the soothing colors and can reduce heart rate and blood pressure. Blue is perfect for a bedroom or home spa.
Purple - Purple has long been associated with wealth and royalty. In addition, it enhances mental abilities and creative skills and has a calming effect.
Brown - Brown is conservative, safe and nurturing. This well-grounded color is good for times when you feel things are out of control.
Turquoise - Turquoise is a bridging color, conducive to friendly conversations and congenial get togethers.
