Q: I am a piano teacher who gives lessons in my home. The piano is located in my formal living room, which contains furnishings from the Queen Anne period and rich jewel tones in the upholstery and drapery fabrics. I need a carpet color that will stand up to my students but also retain its beauty when I entertain. Any suggestions?

A: I suggest you select a jewel tone that complements your decor and helps continue the "mood" you've created in this formal area of your home. Hunter green, navy blue, "tassel" gold and burgundy are classics you can choose from depending on which color(s) in the upholstery and drapery fabrics you'd like to highlight. Although darker colors have a tendency to show lint, with proper maintenance your carpet should remain beautiful for many years to come. Concerning construction/style, consider a pinpoint Saxony with a beautiful finish (i.e. smooth surface) to complete the elegant look of your living room.
